Travelling through NPR's first listening playlists, I've discovered Marissa's fifth album called after her name, Marissa Nadler (2011). It sounds like Mazzy Star sometimes and moves between Dream-pop and Folk. Baby, I will leave you in the morning (Lyrics) is a hazey ballad while Nadler moans "Baby will you love me when I’ll return, Promise I will hold you in my arm, Every night I dream you sleeping next to me"
Metronomy is an electronic music group formed by Joseph Mount in England. from their third and latest so far, The English Riviera (2011), I enjoyed listenning to Everything Goes My Way (Lyrics), which is a duet of Mount and Anna Prior, the group's new drummer. I find it very suitible for such a beautiful morning
Continuing my project called "7 Days, 7 Songs" hoping it's interesting so far. This week's issue is seasons which I decided to write about after realizing that the summer is finally here. So before I'll miss the rain (And seems that it will happen in a few days...), here are this week's songs.
Saturday: Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man - Funny time of year
On their monumental album, Out of Season (2002), a moment before the album ends, you can listen to Gibbons shouting: "Falling like a silent paper Holding on to what may be, It's a funny time of year.
I can see There'll be no blossom on the trees, And time spent cryin' has taken me in this year" on Funny time of year (Youtube live, Lyrics). Portishead alike song, which grows within each minute, waiting for their next album!
Sunday: Black Box Recorder - Seasons in the sun
With the immortal lines "We had joy we had fun we had seasons in the sun, But the hills that we climbed were just seasons out of time" written by Rodney Marvin McKuen, an American poet and first sang by Jacques Brel on 1961, Seasons in the sun is one of my favourites. It became popular in US by Terry Jacks' version on 1974. I've chosen Black Box Recorder's cover version to this song (Youtube, Lyrics) on their debut album, England Made Me (1998), but while I was wandering through Youtube, I found this lovely cover by Nirvana (Youtube), while Kurt Cobain played the drums, instead of Dave Grohl which took position of the Bass guitar, Leaving Krist Novoselic for the Electric guitar,
awasome!
Monday: Crowded House - Four seasons in one day
Althought I'm not a great fan of this Austrlian Soft-Rock band, I cannot stay apathetic to one of their best songs, Four seasons in one day (Youtube, Lyrics), taken from Woodface (1991). Brothers Finn still sings this one on their performances in honor of Paul Hester, Crowded house's ex-drummer who committed suicide on 2005. Knowing that, the words "Even when your feeling warm, The temperature could drop away Like four seasons in one day" contains an extra meaning.
Tuesday: Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Time of the season
Taken from the long-time collaboration of ex-Belle and Sebastian singer, Isobell Campbell and Mark Lanegan, Time of the season (Youtube) is a silent ballad you can find in their latest release Hawk (2010). I really enjoy to hear them sing together, hope you'd like it too.
Wednesday: Soltero - Songs of the season
Soltero are not so familier right now, but it seems he's (Tim Howard) doin' a great job. I chose his Songs of the season (Lyrics) from the forth album Hell Train (2005). a bit folky one and melodious, plain and simple as I like
Thursday: Joseph Scott Phares - Season
I haven't heard about this young guy from Illinois, but I randomaly got one of his Demos called Season, a quiet guitar ballad which covers slightly lines like"If I donwt let you touch me, how can you defeat me?". Maybe we'll hear more of this guy who is currently unsigned!
Friday: The Mountain Goats - High hawk season
The last song for this issue is taken from the latest release by The Mountain Goats called All Eternals Deck (2011). On their 13th album I especially liked High hawk season (Youtube, Lyrics)with the background voices which takes us back to the wild American west while John Darnielle sings "The summer will reveal itself to those whose hearts are trueAnd to the faithless few."
Last week I listened to few randomal albums which I've been stumbling upon on Grooveshark. Suddenly, I bumped a band called The Airborne Toxic Event, which sounds to me like a Brit-Pop kind. Then, on track number seven, Sometime around midnight (Lyrics), I thought it was Jarvis Cocker from Pulp singing. Mikel Jollett's voice sounds great and the song moves from quite melody at its start towards a brilliant Rock song which collaborates elements of U2, Coldplay and Black Rebel Motorcycle club. Jollett's sings about his Ex-girlfriend and it feels so real and heartbreaking while he screams: "Then she leaves, with someone you don’t know. But she makes sure you saw her. She looks right at you and bolts."
After an impressive debut concept album, Hospice, which dealt with cancer, lost and medical treatments, I was afraid of the second album fall. How can this band create another masterpiece or create at all something after hospice? Seems that I was wrong... and I'm so glad about that. Burst Apart don't fall short of hospice. Of course, this is not a concept album, it's a bit more electronic but I find it more Optimistic (If we can find that kind of word after hospice).
I find Peter Silberman's soft voice amazing. I don't want love (Youtube, Lyrics) gives a clue for what goes next as Silberman's declare: “If I leave before you, Then I walk out alone. Keep your hands on your side, When you follow me home, I don't want love”. Feels like The Antlers aren't looking for the love of the audience but searching for new adventures through this album. Rolled Together (Lyrics) and Tiptoe are good examples for experimental tracks on this one.
While I go on and on, over French exit (Lyrics), one of the weakest tracks here, gloomy Every night my teeth are falling out ( Lyrics) and Parentheses (Lyrics), it feels like The Antlers never left Hospice, they only changed the issues around it.
Hounds (Lyrics) sounds like a collaboration between The Antlers and Beirut while Silberman says: "They want to conquer you, abandon you. I want to burden you, belong to you" while Putting the dog to sleep (Youtube, Lyrics) makes an analogy between human and dogs as Silberman writes: "Put your trust in me, I'm not gonna die alone...I don't think so...".
No widows (Youtube, Lyrics) is a perfect song, starting with the lines: "If I never get back home, There's no garden overgrown. No widows on the wall, no widows left alone", which could be part of the previous album as well as beautiful Corsicana (Youtube, Lyrics). Wow, What an album, I need to buy it, so do you...
The song you should purchase the album for: "No Widows", "Corsicana" and "Putting the dog to sleep" The Judge Decision: Get out of Hospice and run to purchase this one!
This week I listened to one of my favourites songs ever written, A line in the dirt (Youtube, Lyrics), by Mark Oliver Everett, which is known as E... And what a life story this 48 years old singer song-writer have got, losing one by one all of his family members left bright marks on his lyrics.
I chose to put inside this collection 3 songs of his second album End Times (2010) in a Trilogy which contains Hombre Lobo: 12 Songs of Desire (Dig) (2009) and Tomorrow Morning (2010). This album foucosed on divorce and aging and is the best of this Trilogy. Together with A line in the dirt mentioned above, I featured In my younger days (Youtube, Lyrics)which looks back on the past with a bit of romantic scent and Sentimental I need a mother (Youtube, Lyrics), where he mentions: "I need a mother, I'm sorry but it's true. I need a lover, Not someone like you". From the last part of this Trilogy I've put inside this collection I'm a hummingbird (Youtube, Lyrics) which got a dark sound of orchestra in the background.
I love his album Blinking Lights And Other Revelations (2005) from which I've chosen In the yard, behind the church (Youtube, Lyrics). My Beloved Monster (Youtube, Lyrics)is taken from the following tour preformed live on With Strings Live at Town Hall (Dig) (2006) and the Last stop: This town (Youtube, Lyrics)is taken from Electro-Shock Blues (1998) as well as Elizabeth on the bathroom floor (Youtube, Lyrics)which was inspired by his mental ill sister diary. She wrote: "Laying on the bathroom floor, Kitty licks my cheek once more And I could try, But waking up is harder when you want to die", and I can't remove this image from my head when I hear this song.
Man Called E. (1992) was his debut album were he used for the first time his pseudonym E. Hello cruel world (Youtube, Lyrics) gives a clue of E's future writings but Looking out the window with a Blue hat on (Youtube, Lyrics) is more optimisitic than the previous. I think that Novocaine for the soul (Youtube, Lyrics) was his greatest hit, but I don't think it's one of his best (Taken from Beautiful Freak).
On the third part of Suede's discography you can find songs from each era. From their wonderful debut album, Suede , I've chosen one of their greatest hits, Animal nitrate (Youtube, Lyrics). Each time I hear Butler's Guitar on the openning of this song, I feel like I've been thrown back to the 90's.
From Their second album, Dog Man Star: Deluxe Edition (1994), I've got Heroine (Youtube, Lyrics), which is much Rocky than other Ballads on this album like Black or Blue (Youtube, Lyrics) with thos thrilling lines: "I don't care if you're black or blue, me and the stars stay up for you. I don't care who's wrong or right and I don't care for the U.K. tonight so stay, stay".
Of course they've done a lot of covers. One of them, taken from Help: Bosnian Relief (1995), Is Shipbuilding (Youtube, Lyrics) which was originally sung by Elvis Costello. When Anderson Sings Costello's words: "It's all we're skilled in, We will be shipbuilding, With all the will in the world, Diving for dear life, When we could be diving for pearls" You can't easily differ who wrote this song.
Staurday Night (Youtube, Lyrics) was the third single from Coming Up (1996) and picked #6 on the British chart, but I'd rather preffer By The Sea (Youtube, Lyrics)which was hidden in the same album, one of suede's greatest ballads.
Sci-Fi Lullabies (2 Cd-Set) (1997) got four songs in here: To The Birds (Youtube, Lyrics) which was the B-side of their debut single, The Drowners. Graffiti Woman (Youtube, Lyrics) was the B-side of the final single of Coming Up [ENHANCED CD] (1996) called Filmstar, High Rising (Youtube, Lyrics) which was the B-side of Glorious So Young from their debut album and Jumble Sale Mums (Lyrics) which was the B-side of Saturday Night, that I mentioned above.
It's time for the second part (of four) which scaninng Natlie Merchant's Discography. After publishing the First Volume , I thought it would be more productive to focous on her less known songs. So here it is...
The opener is Verdi Cries (Youtube, Lyrics) which is taken from In My Tribe (1987) which represents her 10,000 Maniacs era in this mixtape. I diccovered this one lately and it keeps playing in my headphones rapidly. you can also find Gun Shy (Youtube, Lyrics) preformed live in her Live in Concert (1999) taken from the same album above.
Farom her latest album so far, Leave Your Sleep (2CD) (2010), I've chosen If No One Marries Me (Youtube, Lyrics) which reveals the fear of staying alone. I find it ponceptually close to one of her favourite songs of mine, Ophelia (Youtube, Lyrics), taken of an album with the same name, Ophelia (Jewel) (1998). A dark Gloomy song about a lonely girl called Ophelia. On the duets part in this mixtape, there're 2 songs: When They Ring Those Golden Bells (Youtube, Lyrics), which is the final song in Ophelia (Jewel) (1998), where she sings with Karen Peris of The Innocence Mission and it sounds great, a slow country song with acoustic gituars. Another Duet on this mixtape is Photograph (Lyrics) with Micheal Stipe of REM. It seems is was taken from REM's monoumental Out of Time (1991).
Wonderwall (Lyrics) is a cover version preformed live at Chicago. Merchant's tribute to one of UK popular Rock bands of the 90's couldn't have been better. Another cover version for Johnny Cash's, Come Take A Trip In My Airship(Lyrics) is kind of childish, with a singing girl in the background, but maybe that's the magic of this song. Wonder (Youtube, Lyrics) and Jealousy (Youtube, Lyrics) are rhytmic, Blousy ones that is very similiar to other songs. They're both taken from her debut album, Tigerlily (1995), while The Worst Thing (Youtube, Lyrics) and Put The Law On You (Youtube, Lyrics) are taken from her third album Motherland (2001).
Enjoy this mixtape (All the songs in this link) , Stay tuned next week for the third part....
