Pick 5: Five Songs On the Other

האחר (Another) מלווה אותנו כל הזמן - במבט, באופן בו אנו מתאימים את עצמנו לציפיות שלו, קשה לנו בכלל לדמיין את העולם ללא האחר. הכמיהה לאחר לא נעדרת גם מהמוזיקה, אז הנה כמה חמישייה שמדברת על זמן ומרחב אחרים, תהנו

הקצב של Another Bed של The Twilight Sad הסקוטיים, נשמע כמו איך שדפש מוד (Depeche Mode) היו רוצים להישמע עם מבטא כבד מסביבות אגם לוך-נס. בהחלט מדובר בשיר מצויין, שמהווה רק חלק קטן מהאלבום האחרון של ההרכב, No One Can Ever Know מ-2012, שקירב אותם אמנם קצת למיינסטרים, אבל לא קרוב מדי. 

מכאן בחרתי לדלג מעט אחורה לווייט סטרייפס (The White Stripes) התזזיתיים, שהשאירו מאחוריהם ריק שמתקשים עדיין למלא. הצמד הזה, שהורכב מג'ק וייט (Jack White), שחלק מהפרשנים מחשיבים אותו לגאון והאחרים למופרע וממג וייט (Meg White). אחת השמועות טוענת שהזוג נישא בשלב מסויים של הקריירה שלהם יחדיו, אך אין לזה הוכחות ברורות עד כה. בכל אופן, Well It's True That We Love One Another הוא דואט חביב למדי של הצמד הזה, שלוקח את השיר לכיוון פולקי ופחות רוקיסטי מהאלבום ממנו הוא הגיע, Elephant מ-2003. 

ב-1980, שחררו רביעייה אירית את אלבום הבכורה שלהם, Boy, שסימל התחלה של קריירה מופלאה שנמשכת עד כתיבת שורות אלו. באיזשהו שלב, לקראת סוף המילניום הקודם, איבדתי עניין ב-U2, למרות שאני עדיין מוצא עצמי מתענג על האלבונים הראשונים שלהם, בהם ניתן להרגיש את האנרגיות הצעירות של בונו (Bono), דה אדג' (The Edge), אדם קלייטון (Adam Clayton) ולארי מולן (Larry Mullen). השיר Another Time, Another Place, מצליח להקפיץ אותי גם היום וזה הישג גדול למדי. 

החיבור בין אנקל (Unkle) האלקטרוניים לנסיך החושך, מארק לנגן (Mark Langen), שדואג לבקר בישראל לפחות פעם בשנה, הוא אחד השילובים המעניינים שהקשבתי להם מצד שני ההרכבים. התיאטראליות המוזיקלית של Unkle יחד עם קולו האפל של לנגן מייצרים שיר שחודר עמוק אל תוך העצמות, גם בלילות חמים במיוחד. Another Night Out הוא פשוט יצירת מופת שייקח עוד זמן לעכל, כזאת שבורחת מהמיינסטרים אבל אומרת עליו כל כך הרבה. בכלל, האלבום Where Did The Night Fall מ-2010, ראוי להרבה יותר הערכה לטעמי.

בחרתי לסיים עם השיר המופלא של אליזבת' פרייזר (Elizabeth Fraser) מהקוקטו טווינס (Cocteau Twins) ששרה את מילותיו של רוי הארפר (Roy Harper), יוצר אנגלי מכובד בפני עצמו. Another Day הוא שיר בן 28 שנים, שהופיע לראשונה בחלק הראשון של האוסף המצויין של 4AD, הקרוי This Mortal Coil: It Will End In Tears מ-1984 ונושא עימו אווירה קלאסית שלא איבדה מיופיה אחרי כמעט שלושה עשורים.

Song Of The Day (26/2/2012): Johnny Cash And U2 - The Wanderer

Good Evening

Today Johnny Cash should have celebrated 80 years. Cash, one of the greatest country singers of the perior century died on 2003, the same year he lost his life long lover, June Carter. I supose that he had a lot of greater songs than this one, but The Wanderer always sounds to me like a song he sang for June. I first heard it when I bough U2's Zooropa (1993) and was surprised to hear that Baritone voice of Cash instead of Bono's. So happy birthday, Johnny, up there...

Pick One: Damien Rice - One (U2 Cover)

Good Evening

It's Valentine's day eve and it's pretty cold outside. Before I'll go to sleep with my choosen one, there's a song that I would like to dedicate for that beauty which lights my life for twelve years nowdays. One, originally sung by U2 on their Classic album Achtung Baby (1991), has been covered by Irish singer, Damien Rice. His Version is something between Johnny Cash's version and Bono. It seems that he was broken hearted when he sang that one, maybe he thought about his beautiful Ex-girlfriend, Lisa Hannigan. You can hear it on Akh-toong Bay-Bi (2011), a project made for Q magazine for the 20th anniversary of the original....

So this is my Valentine's eve song, What do you say about this version?

Late Night Song: The Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime around midnight (2008)

Last week I listened to few randomal albums which I've been stumbling upon on Grooveshark. Suddenly, I bumped a band called The Airborne Toxic Event, which sounds to me like a Brit-Pop kind. Then, on track number seven, Sometime around midnight (Lyrics), I thought it was Jarvis Cocker from Pulp singing. Mikel Jollett's voice sounds great and the song moves from quite melody at its start towards a brilliant Rock song which collaborates elements of U2, Coldplay and Black Rebel Motorcycle club. Jollett's sings about his Ex-girlfriend and it feels so real and heartbreaking while he screams: "Then she leaves, with someone you don’t know. But she makes sure you saw her. She looks right at you and bolts."

Sunday: Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark

Today it's the memorial day in Israel so I couldn't find other song than I Will Follow You Into The Dark (Youtube, Lyrics), Which appears on Plans (2005), thier Sixth studio album. This is an acoustic Ballad preformed by frontman Ben Gibbard who sings: "Love of mine some day you will die But I'll be close behind I'll follow you into the dark", How Romantic.

Monday: The Twilight Singers - Follow You Down

Follow You Down (Youtube, Lyrics) is taken from the second album of The Twilight Singers called Blackberry Belle (2003). I didn't know that the album was a tribute to Ted Demme (The Director of "Blow"), a close friend of Greg Dulli who died suddenly while playing basketball. The result is a sad album from which I find this one as the most inspiring. 

Tuesday: Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers

Lykke Li is a young Swedish Indie singer named Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson (Wowww). From her second album, Wounded Rhymes (2011), I've chosen her second single, I Follow Rivers (Youtube, Lyrics) that's got a bit of African spirit with light Electronics. Seems we'll hear a lot more from this talented woman. 

Wednesday: U2 - I Will Follow

Going back to the early 80's, where we find a young band from Dublin, which we'll become one of the world greatest bands by the next decade. On their first album, Boy (1980), U2 were a fresh Irish band which sung simple rock songs like this one, I will Follow (Youtube, Lyrics), the openning track of that album is now the most frequently performed by them...

Thursday: Skunk Anansie - You'll Follow Me Down

Back to the end of the 90's, we can find Skunk Anansie's song, You'll Follow Me Down (Youtube, Lyrics) sang by Skin with her powerful, warm voice. This one appeared on their third studio album called, Post Orgasmic Chill [ENHANCED CD] (1999) and was the last release by them before they broke up ('till reunited on 2009). 

Friday: Bang Gang - Follow 

The less familier group on this mixtape is Bang Gang, an Icelandic dream-pop act which makes melodious music. Out of their second album, Something Wrong (2003), I've got Follow (Youtube, Lyrics) which represents the group style. Esther Talia Casey and Bardi Johannsson doing great job there...

Saturday: James Murphy - Please Don't Follow Me 

The weekend has come and it's time to lay back and listen to James Murphy's brilliant track taken from Greenberg Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2010). It starts with a lonely piano playing and collaborates with Murphy's soft voice into a thrilling ballad about loneliness. Please Don't Follow Me (Youtube) is one of Murphy's favourites from my point of view.
